Rob’s passion extends over 40 years of making unique tiles, sculptures and pots. He began eons ago in North Beach, Perth with an uninterrupted view of the Indian Ocean as a young eccentric creator. Rob spent most of his time around a wood-fired kiln, honing in on his skills as a potter.
His pursuit of clay art led to working on and off for a year in Guy Grey Smiths Studio in Pemberton in WA’s southwest, enriching his discipline as an artist among the thriving artistic community, before spending several months as The Bridgetown Potter, beginning his retail art ventures.
A return to Perth inspired a new retail venture in Cottesloe Rob called The Terra Potter Artline. There Rob became a prominent potter, and his works were highly regarded and exhibited in galleries around Perth.
Later, Rob purchased a church in North Fremantle and transformed it into The Pearse Street Pottery. For two years he worked with Mike Steel servicing various commercial art contracts and renovating the former Maison’s Hall.
Rob’s next move was to the heart of Fremantle where he established Leak St Pottery, leading to the birth of the Tile World. Rob began building pizza ovens, and specialised in alfresco areas and waterwalls and continued in a successful retail and wholesale venture, becoming one of the largest tile production businesses in WA.
Rob sold his business for a change in lifestyle but never left his creative side while living and enjoying Fremantle vibes.
When he fell in love with the creative energy and village lifestyle of Medina, Rob created a new haven of artistic endeavour. He now shares his knowledge of clay art and runs regular workshops in The Labyrinth Studio.
